In the hills of Mati City, Davao Oriental, local farmers tending to lush, green fields of organic crops are now seeing their hard work backed by a stronger system of trust. The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) recently conducted the first Annual Surveillance Audit of the Libudon Organic Farmers Association (LOFA) to ensure the integrity of its organic certification.
As a newly accredited Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) Certifying Body, LOFA underwent a detailed review of its procedures. The audit examined whether the association maintains consistent, competent, and impartial practices in awarding organic certifications. This step is critical to protect the value of the “Organic” label and to strengthen confidence between local farmers and consumers.
“Organic certification is not just a label. It is a promise of quality, safety, and sustainability,” said DA-BAFS officials. The audit helps confirm that the processes used by LOFA meet national standards and international best practices, ensuring that farmers’ produce genuinely qualifies as organic.
Once all findings are cleared, the Davao Region is expected to have 32 PGS-certified organic farmers. This growth represents a significant step in supporting smallholder farmers who commit to sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices.
PGS certification allows farmers to verify and promote their products without the high costs associated with third-party certification. It empowers local communities, strengthens legal recognition for organic farms, and enhances market access for farmers producing vegetables, fruits, and other organic crops.
For many members of LOFA, the audit is more than a regulatory check. It symbolizes recognition of their dedication to responsible farming practices, environmental care, and food safety. By participating in PGS, farmers can confidently market their products as truly organic, attracting consumers who prioritize health and sustainability.
DA-BAFS continues to encourage farmers’ associations across the country to adopt PGS certification. By supporting local certifying bodies like LOFA, the agency aims to expand the reach of organic farming, protect consumer trust, and ensure that communities benefit economically from sustainable agriculture.
As organic farming gains popularity in the Philippines, audits and certifications remain vital. They not only safeguard product integrity but also strengthen the livelihood of farmers committed to preserving the environment and producing safe, high-quality food.
