Hope and excitement filled the Mushroom Training Room at the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) in Malate, Manila on August 29, 2025, as dozens of eager learners joined a hands-on training on Basic Mushroom Culture and Cultivation Technology.
The one-day workshop, organized by the BPI–Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD), gave participants practical knowledge on how to grow and multiply mushrooms—a small but powerful step toward building sustainable livelihoods and food security in their communities.
Growing Opportunities from the Ground Up
Participants came from different backgrounds—some were farmers, others were homemakers or employees seeking additional income. But they all shared the same goal: to learn how to grow mushrooms properly and turn it into a viable business.
“Dati po akong housewife. Ngayon, gusto kong subukan ang mushroom farming para makatulong sa gastos sa bahay,” shared one participant from Manila.
The training covered the basics of mushroom farming—from preparing growing materials and sterilization, to spawning, harvesting, and packaging. Trainers also discussed common challenges such as contamination and climate control, and provided simple solutions that can be applied even in small backyard setups.
Mushrooms: A Simple Yet Profitable Crop
Mushrooms are becoming more popular in the Philippines due to their high nutritional value, low production cost, and short growing cycle. With the right techniques, even small growers can harvest mushrooms in just a few weeks.
According to BPI, promoting mushroom cultivation helps in addressing food security, improving nutrition, and creating new income streams—especially for marginalized groups like women, senior citizens, and unemployed individuals.
“Ang kabute ay hindi lang pagkain—ito ay hanapbuhay,” said one of the trainers during the session.
The training also aligns with the Department of Agriculture’s goal of encouraging urban agriculture and community-based farming as part of its Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas campaign.
Hands-On Learning, Real-World Impact
Participants got the chance to try the techniques themselves, with guidance from experts. The interactive format helped them better understand the steps and increased their confidence to start their own mushroom farms at home.
At the end of the program, each participant received a certificate of completion—along with a new sense of purpose.
BPI-CRPSD officials said they are planning to hold more sessions in different locations to reach more aspiring growers nationwide. They also encouraged local government units and barangay officials to help spread awareness about mushroom farming as a low-cost livelihood option.
A Small Step, A Big Change
This simple training shows how even the smallest initiatives can create meaningful change in people’s lives. From a handful of mushroom spores, a family can start a new income source, a community can become more food secure, and a nation can move closer to inclusive development.
“Sa tamang kaalaman, kahit maliit na hakbang ay kayang magbunga ng malaking pagbabago,” said one of the participants proudly.
