Children laughed as they lined up with their parents to receive free fish. Farmers proudly displayed their harvests. Fisherfolk smiled as they showcased their catch. It was a day of unity and recognition in Barangay Bolbok, Batangas City, as the province celebrated “Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Day” on October 17, 2025.

The event, led by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) and graced by Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, paid tribute to the hardworking farmers and fisherfolk who play a vital role in the local economy and food security of Batangas.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Matatag na Agrikultura, Kasama ang mga Mangingisda at Magsasaka.” It highlighted the strength and resilience of local agriculture and fisheries, especially in the face of climate change and market challenges.

One of the featured partners in the event was the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute – Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-FFRDC). The agency was recognized by OPAg for its valuable support in enhancing fishery programs in the province, particularly in promoting the technology behind breeding and growing maliputo—a prized freshwater fish native to Batangas.

The NFRDI-FFRDC also participated in the exhibit area, showcasing not only maliputo but also various ornamental fish species. Visitors were treated to informative materials and educational brochures (IEC), while some lucky attendees received free fish samples.

“We’re happy to partner with Batangas in empowering local fisherfolk. By introducing science-based methods like maliputo aquaculture, we help ensure income and sustainability for future generations,” said a representative from the NFRDI-FFRDC.

The celebration served not only as a tribute but also as a learning and marketing opportunity. Farmers and fishers were able to network, attend product showcases, and gain access to government services and technologies that can boost their productivity.

Governor Recto, in her remarks, expressed her deep appreciation for the agricultural workers of Batangas, calling them the “backbone of our province.” She promised continued support from the local government in terms of funding, training, and infrastructure development.

Batangas, known for its rich agricultural land and vibrant fishing communities, has long been a model for integrated rural development. Initiatives like this annual celebration aim to further strengthen public-private cooperation and remind every Batangueño of the value of locally produced food and sustainable farming practices.

As the sun set on a fruitful day filled with sharing and community spirit, the message was clear: When farmers and fisherfolk thrive, the whole province grows stronger.
