Under the warm sun of Zamboanga Peninsula, women farmers and fishers rise early to tend their fields and nets, balancing work, family, and community needs. Their hands sow seeds of resilience, while their ideas plant the future of local agriculture.
From September 15 to 19, 2025, the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF) held its Lakbay Panayam — “Conversations on the Move” — in Region IX, visiting farms, fishery sites, and local communities to hear directly from those shaping the sector. This initiative, led by PCAF’s Knowledge Management Section (KMS) under the Planning, Monitoring, and Knowledge Management Division, highlighted the vital role of women in transforming agriculture and fisheries.
During the week-long engagement, PCAF learned from women leaders who combine traditional knowledge with innovative practices. From improving sustainable fishing methods to introducing high-yield crops and modern farming techniques, these women have become catalysts for change, driving local economies while preserving their environment.
The Lakbay Panayam sessions also served as platforms for dialogue. Participants shared not just technical insights but also personal stories of perseverance. Many described the challenges of limited resources, market access, and climate risks, yet their determination and leadership continue to inspire fellow farmers, fishers, and the next generation of women in agriculture.
By recognizing these contributions, PCAF aims to ensure that women’s voices guide policy and program development. Highlighting female leadership also reinforces the broader goal of inclusive growth, where both men and women benefit from opportunities in agriculture and fisheries.
“From Roots to Leadership” captures more than just agricultural productivity. It reflects how women nurture communities, mentor peers, and lead initiatives that strengthen local food systems. Their work illustrates the power of knowledge, collaboration, and persistence in creating a resilient and progressive agriculture sector in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
PCAF’s Lakbay Panayam initiative continues to serve as a bridge between government, private partners, and local communities, ensuring that policies are informed by those who experience the realities of farming and fishing every day. The program underscores that empowering women is not just a matter of equity but also a key to sustainable growth and food security.
