Under the warm February sun, researchers and field workers moved carefully through rows of rice plants, inspecting every seed and stalk. Their mission: to ensure Filipino farmers have access to the highest quality seeds for a reliable harvest.
This month, PhilRice teams visited registered seed production areas covering 12 hectares in Batac and over 13 hectares in Samar. They checked for off-types, pest damage, diseases, and other factors that can compromise seed quality. The inspections are part of a continuous program to maintain seed purity and protect farmers’ future yields.
The PhilRice team emphasized the importance of regular rouging—removing defective or off-type plants—and proper field management. By working closely across regions, researchers and field staff aim to strengthen the country’s rice production, giving farmers confidence in their crops and helping secure the nation’s food supply.
Through these diligent efforts, every seed planted carries the promise of a healthier, more productive harvest for Filipino farmers.
