Farmers, exporters, and regulators across Southeast Asia are closely watching efforts to ensure their fruits, vegetables, and other food crops meet common quality and safety standards. For the Philippines, March 4, 2026, marked an important step in this regional effort.
The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS), currently serving as Permanent Chair of the Task Force on ASEAN Standards for Horticultural Produce and Other Food Crops (TF-MASHP), led a virtual orientation on the Guidance Manual for Harmonization Assessment. The workshop focused on aligning national standards with ASEAN standards for horticultural produce and other food crops.
The session brought together key representatives from ASEAN member countries, providing step-by-step guidance on using the harmonization assessment tool. Participants were able to share best practices, discuss challenges, and learn from one another about how to meet common standards for quality and food safety.
“This initiative is critical for regional cooperation and trade,” a DA-BAFS official said. “By aligning our national standards with ASEAN standards, we ensure our farmers and exporters can access wider markets while maintaining high-quality and safe agricultural products.”
Harmonized standards are particularly important for fresh produce, where differences in quality and safety regulations can create barriers to trade. With a clear framework, countries can ensure their exports meet the expectations of buyers within ASEAN, reducing delays, rejections, and financial losses.
The workshop also highlighted the benefits of standardization in protecting consumers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Consistent standards help prevent the spread of pests and diseases, ensure proper post-harvest handling, and strengthen food security across the region.
As Permanent Chair of TF-MASHP, the Philippines continues to guide member states in adopting harmonized practices. Officials said the initiative strengthens ASEAN integration in the agri-food sector, paving the way for smoother trade, improved product quality, and greater economic opportunities for farmers and exporters alike.
Through such initiatives, the Philippines demonstrates leadership in regional cooperation, promoting safe, high-quality, and competitive agricultural products across ASEAN markets.
