In kitchens, markets, and farms across the Philippines, spinach is a staple green that nourishes families and adds value to local produce. But how do farmers, traders, and consumers ensure the spinach they grow and sell meets consistent quality? The answer may soon come from a new national standard.
The Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) is inviting spinach producers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to join an initial Stakeholder Consultation for the development of the Philippine National Standard (PNS) on Spinach — Product Standard — Grading and Classification. The consultation will be held online via Google Meet on February 25, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The consultation aims to gather technical input and practical insights from those directly involved in spinach production and trade. By involving farmers, agronomists, and other stakeholders, the PNS hopes to create a science-based and practical guideline that ensures spinach is graded and classified uniformly across the country. This can help improve product quality, marketability, and consumer confidence.
Participants can review the draft standard and the activity program online prior to the consultation. Their feedback will contribute to the final standard, which will guide farmers, distributors, and retailers in maintaining high-quality produce from farm to market.
Uniform standards are critical for the agricultural sector. They help reduce post-harvest losses, improve farm income, and provide a clear benchmark for both domestic and export markets. For spinach, proper grading and classification can also promote safer and fresher products for consumers while supporting fair pricing for farmers.
Those interested in joining the consultation are encouraged to register through the online form provided by BAFS. For inquiries, participants may reach out via email at sdd.crops@gmail.com.
With collaborative efforts between government agencies and industry stakeholders, the Philippines moves closer to establishing a reliable, practical, and science-backed framework for spinach production. This initiative ensures that the country’s leafy greens sector remains competitive, sustainable, and beneficial to both producers and consumers.
