The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) has announced the appointment of Manolito F. Apalla as the new Chief of its Technical Assistance Division (TAD). The appointment is expected to help strengthen the agency’s support programs for farmers and stakeholders involved in the country’s fiber industry.
PhilFIDA, an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture, oversees the development and promotion of Philippine natural fibers such as abaca, pineapple fiber, banana fiber, and other indigenous materials. Officials said Apalla’s leadership will play an important role in enhancing technical assistance and strengthening the agency’s internal programs. The Technical Assistance Division is responsible for providing support services that help improve operations, coordinate projects, and ensure that field programs are effectively implemented.
PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza welcomed Apalla’s appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the division. According to the agency, Apalla has shown strong dedication to public service and has long been involved in initiatives that support the development of the Philippine fiber sector.
The fiber industry remains an important part of the country’s agricultural economy. Abaca, often called Manila hemp, is one of the Philippines’ major export commodities and is used worldwide for specialty papers, ropes, textiles, and eco-friendly materials. The Philippines continues to be the world’s leading producer of abaca fiber, supplying a large share of global demand.
