In Dumaguete City, the morning sun shone over local offices as officials and stakeholders gathered to discuss ways to help farmers grow stronger and more sustainable fiber crops. For many smallholders in the region, these programs directly affect their livelihoods and the future of the fiber industry.

On March 2026, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) held a coordination meeting with its Regional Office VII to review the progress of various Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs) in the region. The meeting aimed to ensure that initiatives supporting fiber farmers are effectively implemented and aligned with national goals.

Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza led the session, while Mr. Manolito F. Apalla, Chief of the Technical Assistance Division, facilitated discussions. Participants focused on strategies to strengthen program delivery, address challenges in the field, and explore opportunities for sustainable growth of fiber crops such as abaca, cotton, and other plant fibers.

A key highlight of the meeting was the collaboration between PhilFIDA Regional Office VII, under OIC-Regional Director Jose Dary C. Locsin, and private sector partner Sonny Brothers Company, led by Mr. Sonny Liang. This partnership aims to combine government programs with private investment to promote a resilient fiber industry, improve processing facilities, and ensure that farmer-beneficiaries receive the support they need.

Officials emphasized the importance of close coordination among government agencies, local governments, and private stakeholders. Such partnerships not only enhance program efficiency but also help farmers adopt new technologies, access markets, and increase income from fiber production.

PhilFIDA has been actively implementing initiatives to modernize fiber farming, improve product quality, and expand market opportunities. By maintaining strong regional coordination and collaboration, the agency seeks to ensure that the Philippine fiber industry remains competitive, sustainable, and beneficial to local communities.

The Dumaguete meeting reflects PhilFIDA’s ongoing commitment to supporting farmers, strengthening partnerships, and advancing regional development. With continuous collaboration and innovation, fiber crop programs can provide steady income for farmers while contributing to a sustainable agricultural sector in the Philippines.
