Under the crisp skies of Bauang, La Union, government officials, farmers, and industry experts gathered to tackle one of the Philippines’ most pressing challenges: modernizing agriculture and fisheries. From November 25 to 28, the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF), through its National Committee on Agricultural and Fisheries Mechanization (CAFMech), hosted the National Agricultural and Fisheries Mechanization Summit 2025.

The four-day summit, themed “Advancing Mechanization, Irrigation and Drainage Systems, and Infrastructure for a Resilient and Modern Agriculture and Fisheries Sector,” brought together over 100 participants from the Department of Agriculture, regional offices, local government units, private sector suppliers, academics, and farmers’ cooperatives.

The event focused on improving productivity, enhancing rural infrastructure, and addressing climate vulnerabilities that continue to challenge the sector. Key discussions revolved around three main areas: agricultural and fisheries machinery, irrigation and drainage systems, and infrastructure development.

Representatives from institutions such as the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Engineering (BAFE), Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech), National Irrigation Administration (NIA), Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and other agencies shared updates on policies, ongoing programs, and climate-resilient technologies. Best practices across the value chain were also highlighted, providing practical solutions for farmers and fisherfolk.

The summit concluded with the drafting of consolidated policy resolutions and priority action points, which will guide the Department of Agriculture and related agencies in implementing programs that support mechanization, efficient irrigation, and improved infrastructure.

Officials emphasized that modernization is key to strengthening food security, boosting farm productivity, and building resilience against climate risks. For many farmers and fisherfolk, the summit offered not only technical insights but also a renewed commitment from the government to support their livelihoods.

As the Philippines seeks to modernize its agri-fisheries sector, gatherings like the National AFMech Summit serve as platforms for collaboration, innovation, and forward-looking strategies that aim to benefit the entire rural economy.
