In a lively workshop at Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City on October 7 and 8, local fisherfolk gathered to learn new ways to improve their income through ornamental fish farming. The event, organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Capital Region (BFAR-NCR), aimed to teach sustainable fish breeding and culture techniques.

Experts from the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute’s Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-FFRDC) led the training. They shared valuable information about the ornamental fish industry, explaining how to breed fish, grow natural food, and manage fish health to ensure strong, healthy stocks.

Participants not only listened to lectures but also took part in hands-on demonstrations. They practiced setting up breeding tanks and learned how to prepare natural food for the fish, skills that can help them start or improve their own ornamental fish farms.

Ornamental fish farming offers an alternative livelihood for many fisherfolk, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where traditional fishing may be limited. This industry has potential for growth because ornamental fish are in demand both locally and abroad for home aquariums.

BFAR-NCR hopes that by promoting these modern production techniques, fisherfolk can achieve a more stable income and improve their quality of life. The training also supports the government’s goal to encourage sustainable and diversified livelihoods in the fishing communities.

With proper knowledge and support, ornamental fish farming can be a promising source of livelihood for many families. This workshop reflects ongoing efforts to equip fisherfolk with practical skills to succeed in new markets and protect their natural resources.
