When a medical emergency strikes, every second counts. In many cases, the difference between life and death depends on who is ready to respond.

To strengthen workplace preparedness, 25 employees of the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) completed a four-day training on Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Automated External Defibrillator (CPR-AED). The training was conducted by the Philippine Red Cross from February 24 to 27, 2026, at the NMIS Meat Inspection and Training Development Center building along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City.

The initiative was organized by the Human Resource Development Section as part of its continuing efforts to improve employee skills and promote workplace safety. Officials said the program aims to ensure that staff are ready to respond to emergencies not only inside the office but also in their homes and communities.

During the training, participants learned how to properly assess emergency scenes and provide immediate assistance while waiting for medical professionals. They were trained in wound care, bandaging techniques, and immobilization of fractures. They also practiced performing CPR on adults, children, and infants.

A key part of the course focused on the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). An AED is a portable device that can help restore a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. According to health experts, immediate CPR combined with early defibrillation significantly increases a patient’s chance of survival.

The four-day program included hands-on demonstrations, practical exercises, and simulated emergency scenarios. These activities allowed employees to apply what they learned in realistic situations. Trainers from the Philippine Red Cross guided participants step by step to ensure they understood proper techniques and safety precautions.

Workplace accidents and sudden health emergencies can happen anytime. Government agencies and private companies are increasingly investing in safety training to reduce risks and improve response time. By equipping employees with life-saving skills, organizations can create safer environments for both workers and visitors.
