On a warm evening in Nasugbu, Batangas, students, teachers, and government partners gathered to celebrate the achievements of young learners preparing for their future careers. The event, filled with pride and gratitude, recognized institutions that helped guide students through real-world learning experiences beyond the classroom.
One of the key highlights of the night was the recognition given to the Fisheries Research and Development Center (FFRDC), a research center under the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) of the Department of Agriculture. The center received a Plaque of Commendation and an Award of Partnership for Student Development and Excellence during the Project Immersion Gala Night held on March 6, 2026, at Nasugbu East Senior High School in Batangas.
The awards recognized FFRDC’s important role in mentoring Senior High School students through the school’s work immersion program. Representing the institute during the ceremony was Janet Baral, chief of the Training and Extension Section of NFRDI-FFRDC, who received the recognition on behalf of the organization.
Work immersion is an important component of the Senior High School curriculum in the Philippines. It allows students to experience actual workplace environments related to their chosen fields of study. Through this program, students gain practical skills, build confidence, and better understand possible career paths.
The partnership between Nasugbu East Senior High School and NFRDI-FFRDC was made possible through the institute’s Students’ Training Support program, also known as STrainS. This initiative aims to provide learning opportunities for students interested in fisheries, marine science, and other related fields.
Through STrainS, students are given exposure to research activities, training sessions, and mentorship from professionals working in the fisheries sector. These experiences help students understand how science and research contribute to improving fisheries production, protecting marine ecosystems, and supporting coastal communities.
The Philippines is one of the world’s major producers of fish and other aquatic products. Fisheries provide livelihood to millions of Filipinos, particularly in coastal areas. Because of this, developing young talents and future experts in fisheries science is seen as an important step in strengthening the country’s food security and marine resource management.
