Before sunrise, trucks rolled into a secure compound in Batangas City, carrying sacks of rice meant to support men and women tasked with keeping peace in their communities. For the recipients, the delivery meant one less worry about daily food needs as they continue their duties on the ground.

On January 28, the National Food Authority (NFA) Batangas Branch Office released a total of 208 sacks of rice for members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Batangas City. The rice allocation was purchased by the Batangas City government as part of its support for local security forces.

NFA officials said the distribution highlights the continuing partnership between the agency and the city government to ensure a steady supply of quality rice for legitimate government institutions. The move also reflects the role of NFA in managing buffer stocks and making rice available where it is needed most.

The CAFGU members who received the rice assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines in maintaining peace and order, especially in rural and upland areas. Providing them with stable food support is seen as essential in helping them perform their responsibilities without disruption.

According to NFA Batangas, the rice issued came from government-managed stocks that meet quality standards set by the agency. These stocks are regularly inspected to ensure they remain safe and fit for consumption before distribution.

The Batangas City government funded the purchase as part of its local programs to support uniformed personnel and partner agencies. Officials said such coordination helps ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds while addressing food security needs at the local level.

NFA’s mandate includes maintaining a national buffer stock of rice to stabilize supply and prices, especially during emergencies and lean months. While the agency is often associated with rice distribution to vulnerable households, it also supplies rice to government institutions, disaster response efforts, and other authorized groups.

In recent years, rising food prices and climate-related risks have increased pressure on local governments to secure reliable food sources. Partnerships with NFA allow local units to access rice supplies that are monitored and regulated, helping avoid shortages and price spikes.

NFA Batangas officials emphasized that the agency remains committed to fair and honest service, guided by its slogan that rice should always be of good quality. They added that timely distribution and proper coordination with local governments are key to fulfilling this commitment.

For CAFGU members, the rice support is a practical form of assistance that directly benefits their families. For the city government, it is a way to recognize the service of those helping maintain safety and stability in the area.

As food security continues to be a concern nationwide, initiatives like this show how cooperation between national agencies and local governments can make a difference. Ensuring access to affordable, quality rice remains a shared responsibility, especially for those serving on the frontlines of community protection.
