LPA Near Mindoro Unlikely to Become Storm, But Rains May Trigger Floods, Residents in Luzon advised to stay alert as moderate to heavy rains continue.

A low-pressure area (LPA) spotted just west of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro is not expected to intensify into a storm, but it may still bring moderate to heavy rainfall across parts of Luzon, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

As of Monday morning, September 15, the LPA was located 235 kilometers west of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, according to the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA). Its exact coordinates were at 12.7°N latitude and 118.9°E longitude.

PAGASA reported that the weather system remains weak and has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. However, the weather bureau continues to monitor its movement, as it could still bring widespread rains, particularly in the western and northern parts of Luzon.

Meanwhile, easterlies—or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean—are affecting extreme Northern Luzon. This may cause isolated rain showers and thunderstorms over the region, especially during the afternoon or evening.

Rainfall May Cause Hazards in Flood- and Landslide-Prone Areas

Despite the low chance of storm development, PAGASA warns the public—especially residents in low-lying or mountainous areas—to be vigilant against possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to occasionally heavy rains.

Communities in Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Ilocos Region, Cordillera, and parts of Central Luzon are advised to prepare for potential flooding in rivers, creeks, and urban drainage systems that may not handle sudden downpours. In previous weeks, similar conditions have already led to temporary evacuations and damaged crops in some provinces.

What to Expect Today

The rest of the country, including Metro Manila, may experience generally fair weather with partly cloudy skies, although localized thunderstorms remain possible in the afternoon.

Seafarers and fisherfolk are advised to check the latest sea condition updates before setting out, especially in the West Philippine Sea, where the LPA may still influence wave activity.

Staying Safe Amid Unstable Weather

The Department of Agriculture, through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Operations Center, urges farmers, fisherfolk, and local officials to stay informed and take precautions. Sudden rains may affect harvest schedules, seedbed preparations, and small-scale fishing activities.

The public is encouraged to follow reliable sources like PAGASA’s official website and social media pages for real-time updates and advisories.

As the wet season continues, Filipinos are reminded that even weak weather systems can cause serious impacts. Preparedness and timely information can make all the difference in protecting lives and livelihoods.
