Rain-soaked fields and broken crops painted a familiar scene for farmers in Isabela and Cagayan after recent typhoons swept through northern Luzon. For over 1,700 rice and corn growers, relief arrived in the form of insurance payouts totaling more than ₱11.66 million from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) Regional Office 2.

“Paying claims quickly is crucial so our farmers can recover and start planting again,” said Mario Lumibao, RO 2 Manager.

Among the beneficiaries is Myrian Mallillin from Amulung, Cagayan, whose crops were nearly destroyed. “Almost all our harvest was ruined by the storm. The indemnity from PCIC is a big help. It allows us to start planting again and gives us hope to recover,” she shared.

PCIC RO 2 has been working to expedite claims processing. Between September 25 and October 17, 2025, more than 28,000 claims were filed across the region following typhoons and floods that damaged thousands of hectares of farmland.

Insurance payouts like these are vital for farmers, especially smallholders, as they provide financial support to replant crops and stabilize livelihoods after natural disasters. Agriculture remains a key source of income for many families in northern Luzon, and timely aid helps ensure food security and community resilience.

As climate events grow more frequent and severe, mechanisms such as crop insurance are increasingly important to protect farmers and sustain agricultural production. Officials continue to encourage farmers to register for insurance to safeguard against future losses.

The release of funds in Isabela and Cagayan marks a step toward recovery, giving farmers the means to rebuild their fields and look forward to the next planting season with renewed hope.
