The vibrant textures of handwoven abaca caught the eye of international visitors, showcasing the talent and hard work of Filipino artisans. Each piece told a story of culture, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods rooted in local communities.
During his three-day official visit to the Philippines, Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, met with the Department of Agriculture to discuss ways to strengthen global cooperation on food security and sustainable farming.
In line with this engagement, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), led by Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, hosted a special exhibit highlighting the country’s abaca industry. The Shelmed Cottage Treasures booth featured a variety of abaca-based products, demonstrating the natural fiber’s versatility and the craftsmanship of Filipino artisans.
Abaca, a native fiber used in ropes, handicrafts, and textiles, has long been a source of income for rural communities in the Philippines. By promoting high-quality abaca products, PhilFIDA aims to boost local livelihoods, support sustainable practices, and enhance the industry’s competitiveness in international markets.
“The exhibit reflects our commitment to empowering farmers and artisans while contributing to inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth,” said Atienza. “Abaca is more than a crop—it is a livelihood that strengthens communities and preserves cultural heritage.”
Dr. Qu praised the Philippines’ efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture and expressed support for initiatives that enhance rural incomes while protecting natural resources. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration to achieve food security and sustainable development goals.
The visit also highlighted opportunities for Philippine abaca producers to connect with global partners, explore innovative uses of natural fibers, and adopt technologies that increase efficiency and environmental sustainability. PhilFIDA continues to provide training, market access, and policy support to help the sector thrive.
