MANILA – As food prices continue to affect the daily lives of many Filipinos, global support is growing for the Philippines’ push to improve farming and ensure that even the poorest families have access to affordable and nutritious food.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in the Philippines expressed full support for the government’s ongoing efforts to transform the country’s agrifood systems, especially for the benefit of small farmers, fisherfolk, and vulnerable communities.

In a public statement, FAO Philippines praised the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) strategies to modernize the agriculture and fisheries sectors while still focusing on the needs of the poorest sectors of society.

One of the key programs supported by FAO is the Php 20 Rice Program, which aims to provide affordable rice to low-income families. The plan, backed by both national and local government units, seeks to make quality rice more accessible despite rising production costs and global market pressures.

“We support the Department’s modernization plans, especially those that aim to make Philippine agrifood systems more productive, profitable, and sustainable,” FAO Philippines stated.

What Is Agrifood System Transformation?
Agrifood system transformation means improving the entire journey of food—from the farm, to the market, to the plate. This includes better technology for farmers, efficient food processing and storage, improved logistics, and stronger support systems like crop insurance, training, and fairer trade policies.

The DA has been rolling out programs aimed at increasing yields, introducing climate-smart agriculture, and investing in agri-infrastructure such as irrigation, post-harvest facilities, and farm-to-market roads. These efforts are seen as vital in responding to the twin challenges of climate change and food insecurity.

FAO Philippines said these moves align with their global campaign for “4 Betters”—better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life—which are central to achieving resilient livelihoods and sustainable development.

Why It Matters to Everyday Filipinos
Millions of Filipino families, especially from rural and coastal areas, rely on farming and fishing for income. However, many of them remain poor due to outdated practices, lack of government support in the past, and frequent natural disasters that destroy crops and reduce income.

Programs like the Php 20 Rice initiative and agricultural modernization are meant to uplift these communities, stabilize food prices, and ensure that every Filipino has access to safe and affordable food.

FAO and the Philippines: A Longstanding Partnership
The FAO has been working in the Philippines for decades, providing technical support, data, and international best practices to help improve local farming and fisheries. Its partnership with the DA continues to play an important role in shaping long-term food security in the country.

As the country moves forward with its food and agriculture reforms, FAO emphasizes the importance of including everyone—farmers, fishers, consumers, businesses, and local governments—in the journey toward a stronger and more secure food system.
