Lively discussions and knowledge-sharing marked the second day of the 6th Philippine National Soil Laboratory Network (Phil NASOLAN) Assembly held on November 6, 2025, as experts, scientists, and agriculture officials gathered to strengthen the country’s soil laboratory systems.
The event, organized by the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), focused on boosting the capacity of soil laboratories nationwide to provide accurate data and science-based support for farmers. Reliable soil testing is key to ensuring better crop yields, sustainable land use, and improved soil fertility across the Philippines.
In her presentation titled “The Mobile Soil Laboratory in its First Year: Accomplishments, Learning, and Ways Forward,” Laboratory Services Division Chief Maribel R. Jalalon discussed the achievements of the mobile soil laboratory project, which aims to bring testing services closer to farmers in remote areas.
She also shared future plans, including the development of a national soil test result database and a web-based or mobile application that will allow farmers to easily access on-farm fertilizer and soil management recommendations. These digital tools are expected to help smallholder farmers make data-driven decisions to improve productivity while protecting the environment.
Other technical experts—Mr. Elly Paul A. Tomas, Raphael Henri B. Mundo, Dr. Maria Carmela Q. Capule, and Dr. Junesa U. Cristobal—presented updates on recent trends in soil analysis and accomplishment reports from their respective sectors. Their presentations highlighted innovations in soil health monitoring, laboratory efficiency, and the use of advanced testing technologies.
To recognize outstanding contributions in the field, DA-BSWM Director Gina Parde-Nilo led the awarding of certificates and tokens to licensed soil laboratories. She also oversaw the distribution of technical and scientific equipment funded under Presidential Decree No. 1435 and the National Soil Health Program (NSHP). These tools are expected to enhance the laboratories’ capability to perform high-quality soil testing and analysis across regions.
As the day concluded, Ms. Florfina P. Sanchez facilitated the discussion on the Mechanics of the Workshop for the Phil NASOLAN Committee Meeting, which aims to align ongoing initiatives with the country’s broader agricultural goals under the “Bagong Pilipinas” framework.
The assembly underscored one important message: investing in soil health is investing in food security. Strengthened soil laboratories, better data management, and advanced technology will help ensure that Filipino farmers have the right tools and knowledge to cultivate a more productive and sustainable future.
