Early in the year, as traffic builds and pollution concerns remain across Metro Manila, officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the National Capital Region gathered to plan how to better protect the environment and serve the public in 2026.

On January 5, DENR-NCR held its first Executive Committee (ExeCom) Meeting for the year at the National Ecology Center in Quezon City. The meeting marked the start of preparations to align programs, address challenges, and set clear priorities for environmental protection in the region.

The meeting was led by Regional Executive Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias, with OIC Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Engr. Henry P. Pacis. Key officials and unit heads were present to discuss plans, ongoing concerns, and strategies that will guide the agency’s work in the coming year.

During the ExeCom meeting, DENR-NCR officials reviewed major environmental issues facing Metro Manila. These include waste management, air and water quality, protection of urban green spaces, and compliance with environmental laws. The region continues to face pressure from rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate-related risks such as flooding and extreme weather.

Officials emphasized the need for strong coordination among offices to ensure programs are implemented efficiently. Clear direction and shared responsibility were highlighted as essential to delivering fast and effective public service. Leaders stressed that environmental programs must translate into real improvements felt by communities, especially those living in densely populated and vulnerable areas.

The management also discussed aligning regional initiatives with national government priorities. This includes strengthening enforcement, improving data-driven planning, and working closely with local government units. Cooperation with cities and barangays is seen as critical in addressing pollution, waste disposal, and conservation efforts.

Transparency and accountability were also key themes during the meeting. DENR-NCR leadership reiterated its commitment to open governance and proper use of public resources. Officials were reminded that trust from the public depends on consistent performance and visible results.

As Metro Manila continues to grow, environmental protection becomes more challenging. Traffic congestion, solid waste, and the loss of natural spaces directly affect public health and quality of life. DENR-NCR said its programs for 2026 aim to balance development with sustainability, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of the environment.

The meeting ended with a renewed pledge from the leadership to provide strong and ethical guidance. DENR-NCR committed to pushing forward programs that protect natural resources while safeguarding the welfare of millions of residents in the capital region.

As the agency moves into 2026, its leaders stressed that success will depend on teamwork, discipline, and continuous engagement with communities. The goal, they said, is a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Metro Manila for present and future generations.
