Early morning in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City, inspection teams moved from one establishment to another, checking documents and facilities. For residents and business owners, the visit was a clear sign that environmental laws are being strictly enforced to protect public welfare and natural resources.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Metropolitan Environmental Office (MEO) – East conducted a series of inspections in February 2026 as part of its intensified enforcement drive. The activity focused on lumber dealers and several quick service restaurants in the area.

For lumber dealers, authorities verified mandatory registration, valid permits, and compliance with DENR Administrative Order No. 2021-06. This order regulates the importation and movement of imported wood products. The inspections also ensured adherence to Presidential Decree No. 705, or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines, which aims to prevent illegal logging and trade of forest products. Officials stressed that all timber products sold in the market must have legal sources and proper documentation.

At the same time, the team inspected selected restaurants to check compliance with environmental laws. These include Presidential Decree No. 1586 under the Philippine Environmental Impact Statement System, Republic Act No. 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act, Republic Act No. 8749 or the Clean Air Act, and Republic Act No. 9275 or the Clean Water Act. The goal was to ensure proper waste management, pollution control, and safe handling of hazardous materials.

According to DENR MEO–East, these enforcement activities help prevent illegal operations, reduce pollution, and protect forests and waterways. Regular monitoring and compliance checks also encourage businesses to follow environmental standards and operate responsibly.

Environmental protection is not only the duty of authorities but also of businesses and communities. By working together and following the law, stakeholders can help maintain clean air, safe water, and sustainable forest resources for future generations. Strong enforcement today can mean a healthier and safer environment for everyone tomorrow.
