Rolling fields and fertile lands in Brgy. Jose, Luisiana, Laguna, and Brgy. Daine II, Indang, Cavite recently became the focus of careful study as the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) carried out topographic surveys. These surveys are part of the first steps in establishing Sustainable Land Management Exemplar Sites (SLMES) in both locations.

The survey, led by the Soil Conservation and Management Division (SCMD), took place on February 10 and February 25, 2026. Its main goal is to collect crucial data on land features, slopes, soil types, and water resources. This information will guide the planning and design of farm layouts for SLMES, ensuring that agricultural practices in these areas are productive, efficient, and environmentally sustainable.

SLMES are model farms that demonstrate sustainable land management techniques. They aim to promote soil conservation, proper water use, and long-term agricultural productivity, helping farmers adopt practices that protect the land while increasing crop yields. By studying the land carefully before construction, DA-BSWM ensures that each exemplar site is tailored to local conditions, maximizing both environmental and economic benefits.

Officials from the SCMD highlighted that the topographic survey is a critical first step in building these model farms. Accurate mapping allows planners to design drainage systems, irrigation layouts, and crop placements that prevent erosion, improve soil fertility, and sustain local ecosystems.

The initiative also aligns with DA’s broader goal of supporting Masaganang Agrikultura and a Maunlad na Ekonomiya through science-based farming solutions. With the SLMES serving as practical examples, local farmers can learn and adopt sustainable practices that safeguard the land for future generations.

DA-BSWM continues to promote collaboration, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing as part of its mission to transform Philippine agriculture. These efforts reinforce the importance of planning, innovation, and responsible land management in building resilient farming communities.
