In the tobacco fields of Pangasinan, farmers rise early to tend to rows of green leaves that will one day become the prized burley tobacco used in local and international products. For these farmers, success begins with water—clean, reliable, and well-managed irrigation is critical for growing healthy plants and producing high-quality harvests.

Israel C. Ramos, Agriculturist II and Acting Senior Tobacco Production and Regulation Officer at the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) – Pangasinan, emphasized the importance of clean irrigation water in tobacco cultivation. He explained that the source of water is a key factor in maintaining plant health. In many tobacco farms across Pangasinan and neighboring Tarlac, deep wells are commonly used to ensure a stable and controlled supply of water for the crops.

“Having water is not enough,” Ramos said. “It must also be clean and free from contaminants. Dirty water can cause growth problems and reduce the overall quality of the harvest.”

Contaminated water can introduce harmful substances or pathogens that affect tobacco leaves, potentially lowering the value of the crop and impacting farmers’ incomes. By contrast, a well-maintained irrigation system using clean water supports consistent growth, prevents stress on the plants, and ultimately leads to higher-quality burley tobacco.

Ramos also noted that proper irrigation management includes monitoring water levels, scheduling regular watering, and protecting water sources from pollution. These steps not only benefit the plants but also help conserve resources and promote sustainable farming practices.

The guidance comes as part of ongoing efforts by the NTA and local agricultural offices to support tobacco farmers in improving crop quality and productivity. By focusing on basic but essential practices like clean irrigation, farmers can ensure that their crops meet market standards while protecting the environment.

For tobacco growers in Pangasinan and Tarlac, investing in clean water and proper irrigation is more than a farming technique—it is a pathway to better yields, higher income, and a stronger position in the competitive tobacco industry.
