Before sunrise in Piat, Cagayan, farmers gathered at the National Swamp Buffalo Gene Pool and Dairy Buffalo Farm, eager to learn new skills that could help strengthen their livelihood. For many of them, raising carabaos is more than a source of income—it is part of their family tradition. But with changing market demands and the need for better breeding practices, they know that learning modern methods is essential.
To support this goal, the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) conducted a two-day Training Course on Buffalo Bull Management last December 9–10. The activity was held through the Bull Entrustment Program (BEP) of DA-PCC at Cagayan State University (CSU), which aims to improve carabao breeding in the region.
During the training, farmers were guided on proper care and management of breeding bulls. Topics included animal health, correct feeding practices, reproduction techniques, and accurate record-keeping—key skills needed to maintain strong and productive herds. Trainers explained that well-managed bulls play a major role in improving local breeding lines, which can lead to better milk production, stronger offspring, and higher income for raisers.
Participants also learned their responsibilities as future beneficiaries of the BEP. Through the program, selected farmers receive high-quality breeding bulls to be used in their communities. These bulls help upgrade the genetic traits of native carabaos, supporting the long-term development of the carabao industry in Cagayan and nearby provinces.
Local officials and PCC specialists emphasized that successful carabao breeding can contribute to food security and rural livelihoods. In recent years, demand has increased for dairy products such as fresh milk, pastillas, yogurt, and other carabao-based goods. With proper training, farmers can help meet this demand while ensuring healthier herds and improved productivity.
Participants expressed gratitude for the training, noting that the lessons will help them manage their animals more efficiently. Many said that programs like this empower small farmers and give them confidence to expand their livelihood.
As the region continues to invest in livestock development, initiatives such as bull management training strengthen the foundation of the local dairy and draft-power sectors. For the farmers of Cagayan, the knowledge they gained marks the beginning of a more sustainable and productive future for carabao raising.
