Despite the downpour on September 10, 2025, dozens of farmers, agripreneurs, and gardening enthusiasts braved the weather to attend a free seminar on Plant Nursery Establishment and Accreditation, organized by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) through its Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD).
Held at the Mushroom Training Facility in BPI Malate, Manila, the seminar drew a wide mix of participants eager to learn how to start their own plant nurseries and meet the requirements for official accreditation.
Rain or Shine, Learning Continues
For many attendees, the rainy day was no obstacle—it was a chance to grow a new livelihood. Participants took notes, asked questions, and engaged with experts from BPI, who explained the step-by-step process of setting up a nursery and producing high-quality planting materials that meet national standards.
The training covered topics such as:
-
Basic requirements for plant nursery accreditation
-
Guidelines on sourcing and producing certified seeds and seedlings
-
Pest and disease management in nursery operations
-
Legal responsibilities of accredited nursery operators
-
Business opportunities in seedling production
Many participants said they hope to apply for official accreditation soon, a step that could open more markets and provide a stable source of income.
Why Nursery Accreditation Matters
Accredited nurseries play a key role in ensuring that Filipino farmers get healthy, disease-free, and true-to-type planting materials. This leads to better harvests, fewer losses, and increased food production nationwide.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the quality of planting materials is one of the foundations of successful crop production. Poor-quality seedlings often lead to low yields, while certified planting materials can boost both productivity and income.
This initiative supports the goals of Bagong Pilipinas—a government vision of a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive agricultural sector.
A Seed of Opportunity
Aside from promoting plant health and food security, nursery accreditation is also being promoted as a viable business opportunity for small entrepreneurs. With growing demand for fruit trees, vegetables, ornamentals, and reforestation species, more people are looking at nursery operations as a way to earn income while contributing to environmental and food-related goals.
BPI encourages more Filipinos—especially rural residents and out-of-school youth—to explore this livelihood path. With proper training and government support, even small backyards can become productive nurseries.
Continuing Support for Growers
BPI-CRPSD plans to hold more seminars and training sessions in the coming months to reach more regions and equip aspiring nursery operators with the skills they need.
For updates and announcements, interested individuals can follow the official channels of the Bureau of Plant Industry.
As the country works toward a more productive and food-secure future, every seed planted—and every grower empowered—brings the vision of Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas one step closer to reality.
