The sun rose over Sapul, Calapan City, on February 17, 2026, as local officials, fisheries experts, and community leaders gathered to witness a milestone for MIMAROPA’s fishing sector. With shovels in hand, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Fisheries Integrated Laboratory marked the start of a new chapter in science-based fisheries management.
The new facility, funded under MARLIN 2.3 of the FishCoRe Project, aims to strengthen aquaculture biosecurity, support sustainable fisheries, and improve research and monitoring across the region. By integrating laboratory services with field operations, BFAR hopes to ensure that local fishery resources are protected, managed efficiently, and able to meet the growing demand for safe and high-quality seafood.
BFAR MIMAROPA officials emphasized that the laboratory will serve as a hub for scientific studies, training, and technical assistance for local fisherfolk. “This laboratory is more than bricks and equipment; it is an investment in the livelihood of our communities and the sustainability of our waters,” said a BFAR spokesperson.
The project also aligns with national goals for modernized fisheries management under the FishCoRe Program, which supports research, biosecurity, and climate-resilient practices in Philippine aquaculture. Once operational, the lab will facilitate better monitoring of fish stocks, disease prevention in aquaculture farms, and data-driven policies that benefit both the environment and the fishing communities.
Local stakeholders expressed optimism that the lab will strengthen collaboration between scientists, government agencies, and fisherfolk, ensuring that MIMAROPA’s waters remain productive while supporting the economic well-being of those who depend on them.
As construction begins, the BFAR MIMAROPA Regional Fisheries Integrated Laboratory stands as a tangible commitment to sustainable aquaculture, science-driven management, and the future of Philippine fisheries.
