The sweet smell of fresh durian filled conversations as farmers, researchers, and agriculture experts gathered in Davao City with one shared goal — protecting and strengthening one of the Philippines’ most valuable fruit industries.

The Bureau of Plant Industry, through the Davao National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center, held a Durian Stakeholders Meeting on May 19, 2026, bringing together growers, agricultural researchers, government experts, and industry partners to discuss the current condition of the country’s durian sector.

The activity aimed to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders and support the continued growth and competitiveness of locally produced durian in both domestic and international markets.

During the meeting, participants tackled several important issues affecting durian production, including pest management, climate-related challenges, production costs, and market opportunities. Technical discussions also focused on improving fruit quality, expanding export potential, and helping farmers adopt better agricultural practices.

Officials said the gathering was important as the Philippine durian industry continues to grow, especially with increasing demand from international buyers. Davao Region remains the country’s leading producer of durian and is widely recognized for supplying premium-quality fruits to local and foreign markets.

Industry stakeholders also exchanged ideas on how government agencies and private groups can work together to improve production efficiency and farmer income. Participants discussed possible interventions that could help farmers become more competitive while ensuring the long-term sustainability of durian farming communities.

The meeting included the distribution of Philippine Good Agricultural Practices or PhilGAP forms, which encourage farmers to follow safe and sustainable farming standards. PhilGAP certification helps improve food safety, product quality, and market access for local growers.

Certificates were also awarded to participants and partners who contributed to the activity and ongoing industry programs.

Agriculture experts emphasized that collaboration between farmers, researchers, and government agencies is essential to maintaining the strength of the country’s durian industry. They noted that continued research, training, and market support can help farmers respond to changing weather conditions and increasing market demand.

The Philippines has been expanding its efforts to boost high-value crops such as durian as part of broader food security and agricultural development programs. Officials believe that improving productivity and product quality can create more livelihood opportunities for farming communities while strengthening the country’s agricultural exports.

As the meeting concluded, participants expressed hope that stronger partnerships and continuous support programs would help local durian growers remain competitive and resilient in the years ahead.
