PhilFIDA, CARE Discuss Support for Fiber Farmers in QC

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) recently met with CARE Philippines in Quezon City to discuss possible areas of collaboration aimed at helping fiber farmers and their communities. The meeting, held on June 15, 2026, focused on identifying programs and initiatives that could improve the welfare of farmers engaged in the country's fiber industry.

The discussion was led by PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, together with Officer-in-Charge Chief of the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division Engr. Maritess M. Puspus. Representatives from CARE Philippines joined the dialogue to explore opportunities for partnership and community-based development efforts.

Among the key topics discussed were initiatives that could promote fair pricing for fiber products, provide training and capacity-building programs for farmers, and strengthen support services that help improve productivity and livelihoods. Both parties also emphasized the importance of empowering farming communities through education, skills development, and access to opportunities that can increase their resilience against economic and environmental challenges.

The Philippine fiber industry plays an important role in the country's agricultural economy. The Philippines is one of the world's leading producers of natural fibers such as abaca, which is widely used in specialty papers, handicrafts, textiles, and industrial products. Fiber farming provides income to thousands of families, particularly in rural areas where agriculture remains a major source of livelihood.
