Just as the sun rises over rice fields across the country, many Filipino farmers continue searching for new ways to improve their harvests and earn more for their families. This National Rice Awareness Month, a new learning opportunity is opening its doors to help them face these challenges with modern tools and practical knowledge.

The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) has announced two online learning sessions under its “Emerging Technologies on Rice Program,” aimed at promoting smarter, healthier, and more sustainable rice production. The webinars, scheduled for November 21 and November 24, focus on technologies that support the country’s fight against malnutrition and rural poverty.

The first session on November 21 will highlight Organic Rice Farming and Value-Adding. This topic is expected to draw strong interest, especially among small farmers who want to reduce costs on synthetic inputs and explore niche markets for organic produce. ATI said the session will also explain how simple processing and product development can raise incomes, even for farmers with limited resources.

On November 24, the second webinar will introduce Low-Glycemic Index (Low-GI) Rice, a type of rice that can help people manage blood sugar levels. With the Philippines recording a steady rise in diabetes cases in recent years, agricultural agencies have been encouraging the production and consumption of healthier rice options. ATI experts will discuss how Low-GI varieties are developed, how they grow in local conditions, and what opportunities they may offer to farmers and consumers.

Both activities are free and open to the public. Participants only need to register online to secure a slot. ATI emphasized that the sessions aim not only to teach new technologies but also to build a more informed farming community—one that understands how food choices, crop management, and innovation are linked to health and national development.

National Rice Awareness Month is observed every November to highlight the importance of rice in Filipino life and to remind the public to reduce waste, support local farmers, and consider healthier rice alternatives. ATI’s webinars form part of the broader campaign encouraging communities to become “RICEponsible,” a term that promotes mindful consumption and sustainable production.

As the agriculture sector continues to adapt to climate change, rising costs, and shifting consumer needs, programs like these offer a path for farmers to stay competitive and resilient. Through accessible online training, ATI hopes more Filipinos—young and old, rural and urban—will gain the confidence to adopt new ideas and help strengthen the country’s food security.
