Under the warm October sun, smiles and pride filled the air at the Regional Mango Center in San Marcelino, Zambales, as 139 farmers graduated from a series of hands-on training sessions aimed at improving rice production and sustainability in the province.
The training, held under the program “Scaling the Adoption of Pest and Nutrient Management Technologies in Rice for Farmers in Zambales,” was designed to equip farmers with modern, science-based farming practices that reduce pest damage, improve soil health, and increase yields.
For many participants, the lessons meant more than just new techniques—it was a chance to build a better future for their families. “Maibabahagi ko ang aking natutunan sa mga tagapangalaga sa bukid. Maituturo ko rin ito habang lumalaki ang mga anak ko,” shared Rubylyn E. Estong from Biay, Sta. Cruz, expressing her commitment to pass down what she learned to the next generation.
The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Provincial Government of Zambales and the municipal governments of San Marcelino, Botolan, and Sta. Cruz. The program ran across six batches, ensuring that more farmers from different areas could benefit from the technology and knowledge shared.
During the graduation ceremony on October 21, several officials attended to show their support, including Arnel V. Abayan from the Provincial Agriculture Office of Zambales, 2nd District Representative Hon. Enrico Matibag, and Deputy Executive Director for Development Karen Eloisa T. Barroga. Representatives from President Ramon Magsaysay State University (PRMSU) and local government offices also joined the event.
Officials praised the dedication of the graduates, emphasizing that learning and applying new agricultural technologies play a key role in boosting local rice productivity while reducing dependence on costly farm inputs. They also encouraged farmers to continue sharing their knowledge within their communities to strengthen local food security.
The Department of Agriculture and its partner institutions continue to promote science-based approaches in rice farming to help Filipino farmers adapt to climate change, reduce losses, and ensure sustainable harvests for generations to come.
